More or less everyone should heard of the so call MG Revolution, or the MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver 3.0 by now. I’m not going to showcase the pictures here, but to rant about my disappointment…

If you don’t know what’s going on, please watch this video about MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver 3.0

MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver 3.0 = RG 1/100 Scale

Let’s compare the features:

Features RG RX-78-2 Gundam MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver 3.0

Overall it is a slight improvement from the old MG, but compare to RG? Not impressive at all, especially when you are paying 4750 yen for its quality.

MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver 3.0 Expansion Pack

This is the part I HATE the most. Another evil scheme to milk the fans money! Package the main body in a cheaper price, then tease us with the “weapon set”, “extra armor”, “effect parts” are the common tricks for Super Robot Chogokin series. But why this happen on Gunpla? >___<

MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver 3.0 Expansion Pack

In the MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver 3.0 Expansion Pack there are LED Unit, Gundam Hammer, Hyper Bazooka, Beam Javelin and water decal?? Why can’t you just package them together with the kit? Fans better pray that this thing is not Bandai Online Shop limited edition.

Trust me, Gundam Ver Origin is coming really soon. What do you think about this Ver 3.0? *looks at the comment below*

I beg to disagree on this article. If you are gonna compare the production cost of a 1/144 scale RG, pretty much it’s less compared to producing a larger 1/100 upscaled MG kit. Just do the math. And nothing has been in stone yet regarding the Expansion Pack, so the author cannot assume that Bandai will set a higher price point or worse, sell this an Online Hobby Exclusive.

Glad to hear from you. I can see your point there. My main point of this article is about the ratio of the features vs the price. As shown in the table, by it doesn’t seem to be as revolutionary as it sounds.

Let’s compare MG Gundam ver 2.0 and ver 3.0, Bandai did a good job improving it. But RG VS MG 3.0? Other than more parts and movable gimmicks, overall it looks the same. If all future 3.0 kits are package with LED unit & water decal, that will be “revolutionary”.

To make it worse, they removed the Hyper Bazooka and package it to the so call “expansion set”. Among the set, the best part are the LED and bazooka. I estimate the price of the expansion set will be around 1500 yen. By doing this, What so revolutionary compared to OO Gundam + LED GN drive?

If you see how Bandai recently try so hard to promote their online shop, it is hard to tell this won’t be a online shop limited item. To be honest I really don’t want it to be limited in anyway.

They could have package them together and the price will definitely cheaper than kit + expansion. And the customer impression of the 1st MG 3.0 will be a truly revolutionary, high value & feature rich kit.

At the end of the day… what we get is near 6500++ yen for a 1/100 RG that comes with more parts (might not be a good thing), water decal, 2 extra weapons and a LED unit. Improvement? Yes! Revolution? Not really…

I’m glad to have this discussion. I don’t mean to force my point of view to you but to have a constructive discussion on how this new improvement can be much more impressive and valuable to the fans. Cheers!

The MG Gundam 3.0 does look essentially like an upscaled version of the RG 1/144 counterpart, which is based on the life size Gundam currently standing in Odaiba. In that case it’s understandable for 1/100 scale to have it as well.

The fact that the weapons other than the beam rifle will be sold separately is a little unexpected. If it really is going to be a web exclusive item then we will have to expect to see more of such similar to DLCs for video games nowadays.
